A new year with a lot of singing and rehearsing has begun. We are working on many very interesting projects. The first project coming up is the 2 concerts in Russia in September this year. This is a huge project that involves time-consuming investigations and planning, but so exciting! Some of us have performed with WFC in St. Petersburg before, but singing in Moscow is new for all of us. I have visited both these cities several times by planning these concerts, and I am equal impressed of both cities. They have both a lot to offer, both sights and experiences.
I suppose rehearsing the Verdi’s Requiem has begun, both alone and together with your groups. It is important to know the musical piece well before arriving in Russia. We have no extra time to spend learning the piece there. The conductor is just doing the final rehearsals to help the choir, the soloists and the orchestra to cooperate, and to make the best sound.
As you can see we are arranging a choir seminar in Karlstad, Sweden from the 6th to the 8th of June. Verdi’s Requiem is also here on our rehearsal schedule. These seminars are very popular, and both singers going on the Russian Tour and other singers are attending.
Even though the trip is long for most of you, you are all invited to come to Karlstad for this seminar. Air tickets have become quite reasonable the last years.
Best wishes Jan
In addition to the concerts in Russia, we are working on several other projects for the future years. We must have something to offer you after the Russian Tour.
We have contacted different arenas, orchestras and conductors to cooperate with, but only a few of these projects end with a signed contract.
At present time we are cooperating with Turkey and Rumania hoping to arrange concerts there. Lithuania is celebrating its 1000 years´ celebration in 2009, and Vilnius, the capitol of Lithuania ,is by the European Union elected to be the European Culture City in 2009 with lots of cultural events the whole year through. The contract is still not signed, but there have been many discussions between WFC and the local arranging committee. Hopefully the discussions will give a positive result. Last but no least, many of our European singers wish again to do a concert tour to Australia. This is early in the planning process and we have no information to give you now. We hope we can do this in the near future. Mr. Jan Jensen must do some more research - trips to the different countries first. We must wait and see, but first comes the Russian Tour!
We are all very much looking forward to the upcoming Russian Tour. We have got lots of interest from our members, and we have been forced to set up a waiting list. The singers on the waiting list are singing at the concert in St. Petersburg for sure, but we cannot guarantee there is space for them at the stage in Moscow. The size of the stage might be a problem. We will know in the beginning of March when Mr. Jan Jensen visits the concert hall in Moscow again. Then we will know the size of the stage and the exact number of singers to be on the stage. We wish, of course, that everyone can attend both concerts, but we have to be patient. Those of you on the waiting list will get a message when Mr. Jan Jensen arrives from Moscow. At the same we will also send you a sightseeing offer for both St. Petersburg and Moscow.
In St. Petersburg we will all stay at the Hotel Moscow: http://www.hotel-moscow.ru/english/home.htm
The hotel is located at the Newsky Prospect towards the river Neva. In Moscow it is not yet settled. We will come back with the name and address of the hotel.
About 300 persons will come with us to Russia of whom 225 singers. The stage in the concert hall in St. Petersburg was very narrow last time, but it has been restored and made 2 meters deeper since then.
Many of our loyal members are attending this tour, too. In addition to them we have got many new singers. Exciting! Normally the majority of our singers come from Scandinavia and only a few singers from all the other countries. This time we have 95 singers from the rest of the world.
63 persons from Australia and 12 singers from New Zealand. Fantastic!
The rest of the singers come from Norway Denmark, Sweden, USA, England, Germany, Switzerland, France and Holland. An interesting assembly of people from all over the world.
We are looking forward to getting to know you all!
According to the Russian Embassy in Oslo, we have to wait until 3 months before arriving in Russia to ask for a visa. Not earlier. You will soon get an invitation and an application form you can bring to the Embassy together with your passport and picture to get a visa.
